Adult Recreational Program

Volunteer/Buddy Recruiting

It is that time of the year when we begin recruiting volunteers for our Outdoor Adventure Camps at the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center in Breckenridge, Colorado. Our camps are for brain-injured adults. Campers, RNs and Volunteers come from Colorado as well as surrounding states to experience a number of days and nights of pure Rocky Mountain FUN. 2008 camp dates are June 8-13 (volunteers arriving on the 7th), July 13-18 (volunteers arriving n the 12th), August 3-8 (volunteers arriving on the 2nd), August 24-29 (volunteers arriving on the 23rd), canoe trip September 3-7 (no volunteers needed) and a final NEW session called Creative Minds September 12-15 (possible volunteers needed depending on the size of this new-found camp). RNs and Volunteers arrive one day prior to the campers for a short training session and to get to know their fellow volunteers. Each camp is tailored to the needs of our campers, with the canoeing excursion attracting the higher functioning camper. The NEW Creative Minds session is geared towards women and addressing their creative side. Four of our BOEC camps are set-up on a one-to-one basis, one camper assigned to a buddy for the week. There is one RN who volunteers per camp and she/he is key in medication distribution and any medical issues that might arise. There is a great deal of trust, bonding and new friendships that develop during these weeks. The camps are active with river rafting, wall climbing, ropes course, hand cycling, fishing, eating, journaling, sharing, confidence building, and even a theme dance at each week’s end. The key to our successful program has always been the high quality care provided by the BOEC staff, volunteers and RNs whose hard work and love for the program make it the success story that it has become. Some volunteers use the camps to fulfill field work credits. At week's end each volunteer is given a thank you of $100 in the form of gift certificates. If you wish additional information, before committing or filling out the application (soon to be found on line), please feel free to call Linda at (303) 355-9969 x 310 or visit our web page (www.biacolorado.org ) and click on camps. Together let’s help give someone a summer to remember. You are essential to our programs’ success!
